How to get the most from your tutoring session

Bring relevant course materials.

Make sure to have your notes, homework/assignment, textbook, syllabus, and any other relevant materials on hand. This allows you to reference them during your session and ensures that you spend less time figuring out what you’re working on.

Attempt the homework before the session.

Try to work through your assignments before the session. This will help you pinpoint specific questions and areas of confusion. Plus, your tutor can assess your work to see what you already understand and where you might need more guidance.

Be ready to engage.

Tutoring is not the same as a lecture; it’s an interactive learning experience. Be prepared to actively participate. Come with goals for your tutoring session. Your tutor will guide you with strategic questions, helping you deepen your understanding of the material and enabling you to apply concepts to future problems.

Have realistic expectations.

Understand that mastering course material often takes time. Most students will need more than one session to fully grasp difficult concepts. In fact, many students discover that regularly attending tutoring sessions during a challenging course is helpful for reinforcing their understanding and keeping them on track.
